Heritage

How Kencom Sacco began

A few staff of Kenya Commercial Bank — now KCB Group Kenya — decided to start a Sacco for members of the bank. That initiative gave birth to Kencom Sacco in July 1994 as a Sacco for KCB employees.

Today the society, known as Kencom Savings and Credit Cooperative Society Ltd, is one of the most successful in Kenya. Ownership is through membership: employees and former employees of KCB Group Kenya, our parent company and main partner.

The suitability of the founding idea is confirmed by the fact that Kencom Sacco has remained on a financial growth trajectory since its formation.

“Members needed loan facilities without providing tangible security as was a requirement by the main banking stream, and they believed that such loans could only be provided efficiently and urgently by an in-house Sacco.”

Systems

A modern Sacco platform

The Sacco has procured, trained on, and implemented new Sacco software, enabling both staff and members to access and produce information at their convenience.

The system handles reconciliation, delinquent loan tracking, timely reporting, and fraud mitigation, and it interoperates with other systems within and beyond the organisation — anchoring a robust risk management programme embedded across all procedures and processes.

Member education

As a core cooperative principle under the Cooperative Societies Act, we run continuous education and training for members, staff, and leaders. In 2017 the society trained members on Sacco products and services across all regions, and training continues on a set schedule.
